At SCBJJ we see the art form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a vehicle to help transform our members into the best version of themselves both on and off the mat. If the only thing that you are gaining from SCBJJ is Jiu-Jitsu, then we are failing you. When you join SCBJJ you are becoming part of a supportive community that is committed to helping you push beyond your self-perceived limits.

Unlike most academies, we are committed to excellence in all aspects of your development. As the SCBJJ community continues to grow, and as COVID restrictions ease, we plan to offer a wide range of programs beyond just Gi and No Gi BJJ such as Wrestling/Takedowns, Competition Concepts (movement, tactics), Resiliency (BREATHE® accredited breath work), Combat Conditioning, and Women’s Self Defense.

"It’s the people that make a house a home.” SCBJJ owners Phil Vandenbeukel and Mat Rocca are two of the most well-respected martial artists in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. With a friendship spanning over twenty years, it began as university classmates where Phil and Mat forged their friendship on the wrestling mats for the Brock Badgers. In addition to being university graduates and married family men, both Phil and Mat boast impressive BJJ competition resumes.

Leaders must always operate with the understanding that they are part of something greater than themselves and their own personal interests.

Choosing the right academy can be difficult, and at SCBJJ we know that practitioners want to be associated with the highest level of instruction. We are a proud representative of Gringo Jiu-Jitsu and Cicero Costha. Both Coach Phil and Coach Mat achieved the rank of Black Belt under Professor Fernando “Gringo” Zulick, who is one of the most sought after instructors and affiliations in the country. Lineage matters: both Coach Phil and Coach Mat are elite instructors in their own right, while also having access to some of the best competitors and instructors in Canada and beyond.

Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.
