Coach (P)hil and Coach (M)at = Pm = Promethium

Promethium was the last of the rare earth elements to be discovered. Promethium is highly radioactive but is utilized to further civilization through ongoing research. The element was named after Prometheus, who gifted fire to mortals. Prometheus is a cultural hero and intelligent trickster who is credited as being a champion of humankind. Given the tremendous scholarly efforts to proclaim its existence, the cadre of scientists named Promethium after the Greek Titan to acknowledge their sacrifices and dedicated efforts to synthesize it.

The inspiration for the Squad Crest stems from the periodic table of elements and the value that Coach Phil and Coach Mat place in academics.

The Squad Crest also represents Coach Phil and Coach Mat’s deep-rooted history in training and professional development, having spent many years serving as instructors for first responders.

History of The Crest

The Crest & BJJ

The legend of Prometheus and the synthesis of Promethium are embodied in the guiding principles of Stoney Creek Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is unlike many martial arts in that the purity of the sport is ferociously policed by a loyal community. Consequently, it is a rule rather than an exception for an instructor’s training lineage to be traced back to Brazil.

Coach Phil and Coach Mat have greatly benefited from the teachings of a number of decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts, all of whom received their ranks from the pioneers of the art.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an incredibly effective form of self-defense, and those who commit themselves to training will amass a powerful array of techniques. It is through the ongoing journey of training that practitioners develop a true understanding of humility, tenacity, resilience, and camaraderie, growing as students and human beings.
